Igbos reside in southeastern Nigeria, mainly around the Niger delta region. Similar to many languages, Igbo had several dialects. Anglican missionary activities began there under the CMS in 1870, which coincided with the release of the first Igbo Book of Common Prayer in the Isuama dialect. Subsequently, translations were also done in the Lower Igbo and Upper Igbo (or Onitsha) dialects.

The text in question is a modern translation known as Igbo Union, based on the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. It was initially published around 1945, incorporating earlier elements. Additionally, it contains an Appendix containing various liturgical services and prayers.
